All the Info about Payment Protection Insurance
It is easy to get confused by the jargon and terms used in the financial services industry, and many people remain confused about PPI. Let’s have a look at things in simple terms.
How the PPI Claims Scandal Began
Some years ago the Financial Services Authority (FSA) was informed of a number of complaints regarding mis sold PPI, and an investigation discovered that such practices were widespread. There followed a serious revision of the rules a couple of years later, and the FSA levied fines on many lenders. It is now against the law for lenders to sell single rate PPI policies, and in 2011 a High Court ruling ordered that all fees on mis-sold policies must be repaid, with compensation.
PPI Claims Provisions Explained
The upshot of the High Court ruling was that the lenders, retailers among them, were obliged to make ready funds to pay back the expected rush of PPI reclaim applicants. Indeed, up to the time of writing the total, across all lenders, is in excess of £13billion, with Lloyds Banking Group alone contributing more than £5billion. Anyone who has been mis sold PPI has the right to make PPI claims for mis sold policies, and whether they choose to claim alone or to use the professional approach is entirely up to them.
How Much Will You Be Awarded?
This depends entirely on the size and duration, and the type, of loan involved, and there may be other influential factors. At present the average payout is around the £2,750 mark, but some have been much higher, and we are aware of one that was in excess of £50,000.
